Toilet Paper, Tissue Rolls, Kitchen Rolls & Paper Towels: Understanding the Differences
Share
Toilet paper is soft, thin tissue made to break down in water and be flushed. Facial tissues are softer still and made for your face, not the toilet. Kitchen rolls and paper towels are thicker, stronger and far more absorbent, built to wipe spills and grease, and they should never be flushed.
They all look like "tissue", so many households use them interchangeably. That leads to blocked drains, wasted money, and sore skin. This guide explains how each paper is made to behave, where to use it, and which Fay product fits each job at home, in the kitchen, or at work.
Fay makes a full range of tissue products for homes and workplaces in Pakistan, under names such as Maximo, Jazib, Decor and Hygiene. The advice below reflects how these products are designed and how customers actually use them.
What Each Product Is
What Is Toilet Paper (Toilet Roll)?
Toilet paper is a soft, lightweight tissue wound on a cardboard core and made for personal hygiene after using the toilet. Its fibres are designed to separate quickly in water, so it can pass through pipes and septic systems. It is usually sold as 1-ply or 2-ply rolls in packs of 1, 2, 4 or 10.
What Is a Tissue Roll?
"Tissue roll" is an everyday name, not a separate product. In Pakistan it usually means toilet roll, but some people use it for any roll of soft paper. When you shop, check the pack label: it will say toilet roll or kitchen towel, and that tells you how the paper behaves.
What Are Facial Tissues?
Facial tissues are soft, folded sheets sold in boxes or pocket packs for the nose, face and hands. They are made for gentle contact with skin, and many are lightly perfumed. They are not designed to break down like toilet paper, so they should go in the bin.
What Is a Kitchen Roll (Kitchen Towel)?
A kitchen roll is a thick, highly absorbent paper towel on a roll, made to soak up water, oil and food spills. It is usually 2-ply and has higher wet strength, which means it stays in one piece when wet. "Kitchen roll" and "kitchen towel" mean the same thing.
What Is a Paper Towel?
Paper towel is the wider family of absorbent, disposable towels. It includes kitchen rolls, large maxi rolls, and folded hand towels (N-fold or interfold) used in washroom dispensers. All paper towels share the same job: absorb and wipe, then go in the bin.
Toilet Paper vs. Facial Tissue vs. Kitchen Roll vs. Paper Towel
The main difference is the job each paper is built for: toilet paper dissolves, facial tissue is gentle, and kitchen rolls and paper towels absorb and stay strong.

The Four Differences That Matter
1. Ply: How Many Layers
Ply is the number of tissue layers pressed into one sheet. 1-ply is thin and cheap; 2-ply is softer, thicker and more absorbent. Most Fay toilet rolls and kitchen towels, including Maximo and Jazib, are 2-ply, as marked on the pack.
2. Absorbency: How Much Liquid It Holds
Kitchen rolls are made with more open, bulkier fibres and often an embossed pattern. These create tiny pockets that trap water and oil. Toilet paper is tighter and lighter, so it absorbs less and feels smoother.
3. Wet Strength: Does It Tear When Wet?
Kitchen towels and hand towels are treated to hold together when soaked, so you can scrub a counter without the sheet falling apart. Toilet paper is deliberately weak when wet. That weakness is what makes it safe to flush.
4. Flushability: Can It Go Down the Toilet?
Only toilet paper is made to be flushed. Kitchen rolls, paper towels and facial tissues keep their shape in water and can block pipes, drains and septic tanks. When in doubt, bin it.
Which Paper to Use Where
Match the paper to the room and the mess, and you will use less and spend less.

What N-fold and interfold mean: both are folded hand towels. N-fold sheets are folded in a zig-zag shape; interfold sheets overlap, so pulling one sheet brings the next one up. Both give out one sheet at a time, which cuts waste in busy washrooms.
How to Buy Smart
Bigger packs cost less per roll or sheet. On current Fay prices, the Maximo 10-roll Economy Pack works out to Rs.110 per roll, against Rs.130 for a single roll.

Three more tips:
- Check the ply, not just the roll size. A 2-ply roll often lasts longer because you need fewer sheets per use.
- Store rolls somewhere dry. Tissue soaks up humidity, so keep spare packs out of the bathroom and away from the stove.
- Keep one of each at home. A toilet roll, a kitchen roll and a tissue box cover almost every need and stop you using the wrong paper.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most costly mistake is flushing kitchen roll or facial tissue, because neither breaks down like toilet paper.
- Flushing kitchen towel or tissues. They can clog pipes and septic tanks. Bin them instead.
- Using toilet paper in the kitchen. It tears when wet and falls apart on oil, so you end up using far more.
- Using kitchen roll on your face. It is rougher than facial tissue and can irritate the skin, especially around the nose.
- Wiping food directly with printed towels you are unsure about. Use plain kitchen towel for food contact unless the pack says the print is food-safe.
- Using perfumed tissues on sensitive skin. If you or your child have sensitive skin or allergies, choose an unscented tissue for the face.
- Leaving open packs in damp bathrooms. Moisture weakens tissue and can cause musty smells.
Questions & Answers
Q1. What is the difference between toilet paper and kitchen roll?
Toilet paper is soft, thin and made to break down in water so it can be flushed. Kitchen roll is thicker, more absorbent and stays strong when wet, so it handles spills and grease. Kitchen roll should never be flushed.
Q2. Is a tissue roll the same as toilet paper?
Usually, yes. In everyday Pakistani usage, "tissue roll" means toilet roll. Check the pack: it will say toilet roll or kitchen towel.
Q3. Is kitchen towel the same as paper towel?
Yes. Kitchen towel is a type of paper towel sold on a roll. Paper towel also includes folded hand towels such as N-fold and interfold sheets.
Q4. Can you flush kitchen roll or facial tissues?
No. Kitchen roll and facial tissues are made to hold together in water, so they can block pipes and septic tanks. Only toilet paper is designed to be flushed.
Q5. Can I use toilet paper as a kitchen towel?
You can in an emergency, but it works poorly. Toilet paper tears when wet and absorbs little oil, so you use more and make more mess.
Q6. Can I use kitchen roll as toilet paper?
It is not recommended. Kitchen roll is rougher on the skin and will not break down if flushed. Use it only if you dispose of it in a bin.
Q7. What does 2-ply mean?
2-ply means each sheet has two layers of tissue pressed together. It is softer, stronger and more absorbent than 1-ply. Most Fay Maximo toilet rolls and Jazib kitchen towels are 2-ply.
Q8. What is an N-fold tissue?
An N-fold tissue is a folded paper hand towel with a zig-zag fold, used in washroom dispensers. Fay Hygiene Tissue Fine N-Fold comes in 75, 100 and 200 sheet packs.
Q9. What is the difference between N-fold and interfold?
Both are folded hand towels. Interfold sheets overlap, so pulling one brings up the next. N-fold sheets are zig-zag folded and stacked. Both dispense one sheet at a time.
Q10. Are perfumed tissues safe for the face?
For most people, yes. Perfumed tissues are made for skin contact. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, choose an unscented tissue.
Q11. Which toilet roll pack is the best value?
On current Fay prices, the Maximo Toilet Roll Economy Pack of 10 rolls is the best value at about Rs.110 per roll. The Bachat Pack is the lowest single-roll price, from Rs.60.
Q12. What is the best kitchen roll for frying and oily food?
A thick 2-ply kitchen towel works best. Jazib Kitchen Towel and the Jazib Maxi Roll are made for everyday kitchen spills and draining oil.
Q13. Where can I buy Fay tissue products in Pakistan?
You can order the full Fay range online from the Fay store, including Maximo toilet rolls, Jazib and Decor kitchen towels, Hygiene hand towels and perfumed tissues.
